Silver Sneakers® is a program that provides opportunities to improve fitness, health, and well-being for older adults who are Medicare eligible.
Silver Sneakers Memberships
Several Medicare supplemental insurance plans provide the added benefit of a Y membership. For the adults covered under these plans, their Y membership is free (and the insurance company pays the Y for this service). As a Silver Sneaker member, you are entitled to all the same facility access and benefits of any other Y member. Check with your insurance carrier or bring your supplemental insurance card to the Y and the front desk can check on your eligibility.
Silver Sneakers Classes
Silver Sneakers is an innovative national exercise program specifically designed for the unique health and physical needs of older adults. The Silver Sneakers® Program is taught by a certified instructor and focuses on improving strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. Plus, you’ll enjoy the great music and camaraderie of your fellow participants. In addition, any Y member can participate in these programs regardless of age or membership type.
Silver Sneakers I – Muscular Strength and Range of Motion
Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills. Handheld weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball are used to add variety and fun to the strength portion. Warm-up, cool down and relaxation are part of the progressive format. A chair is used for seated and/or standing support.
Silver Sneakers II – Cardio Circuit
Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscle endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work and handheld weights, elastic tubing and balls are alternated with non-impact aerobics. A chair is offered for support.
Silver Sneakers Stretch
Move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.
