Through the Y’s precollege mentoring programs, Black Achievers and Sponsor-A-Scholar (SAS), volunteers and staff work to provide guidance, support, mentoring and academic advice that can make the difference in student’s lives.
The YMCA Black Achievers Program is a national college readiness initiative designed to help teens
of color – Teen Achievers – set and pursue high educational and career goals. Through academic support, career exploration and mentoring from Adult Achiever volunteers, the YMCA Black Achievers Program helps youth raise their academic standards, develop a positive sense of self, build character, explore diverse college and career options, and meet and interact with
professionals of color – Adult Achievers – who serve as role models to inspire
them to greater heights. Learn more >>
Sponsor-A-Scholar (SAS) is a pre-college mentoring program for
high school students. SAS links academically promising, motivated
students from low-income families with caring adult mentors. Along
with other community collaborators, financial sponsors, and the
program's supportive staff, the mentors make dreams of a college
education come true.
The mission of SAS is to provide academic, personal and financial
support to disadvantaged students who wish to pursue post-secondary
education. By providing personal guidance and ongoing support,
mentors and Y staff help Milwaukee Public high school students
succeed academically and build the foundation for college.
